“Misbegotten” is a play about sapphic love and vampiric desire, about devotion and destruction, about the lies we tell ourselves and truths that can’t be denied. The play follows Ducky, who suffers from an identity crisis and her girlfriend Eve, who happens to be a vampire. Come along as we explore their complicated yet affirming love-story caught up between disembodiment and consumption, distortion and corruption but always connected by deep devotion. 

Vampire stories have a rich history in representing topics such as ‘the body’ and sexuality. Through a more modern day lens “Misbegotten” puts aspects of queer identity, desire and shame to the forefront. The characters struggle with their individual issues, all while being deeply devoted to each other. As queer theatre makers we propose a story that engages with the taboo of female homosexual desire through the lens of vampiric hunger. It is crucial to us that the analogy between queerness and vampirism is not read negatively but rather represents the road to self-acceptance. Through their unconditional support for each other the characters eradicate the notion of “having to love yourself first before you can be loved in return”.

For Knallbrause a shortened version of the first act will be presented as a staged reading. German translation will be provided. Please carefully consult the content notes before attending the performance.
